Setting the Stage: The Showdown
We have arrived during that time of the year, and we have a Sports extravaganza. We have the most ultimate sport, Football (aka Soccer) and the 2026 NBA Finals potentially at the same time. I know majority of the people will be watching the World Cup, but ultimate Sports Enthusiasts like me will me watching both at the same time! This is probably one of the most exciting NBA Finals matchups in recent memory and I am really excited about it. This is also the first time where I don’t care who actually wins the series and ultimately the championship. We have an 2025 NBA Cup Championship and a 1999 NBA Finals rematch. The Spurs were led by David Robinson and Tim Duncan in 1999, who led them to their first championship in Franchise history, and now will have the chance to do the same thing with Victor Wembanyama 27 years later. The Spurs are going for the sixth NBA Title in franchise history while the New York Knicks are trying to win their first title since 1973 (that’s 53 years).

The Generational Talent: The Alien
We have Victor Wembanyama. who is one of the most exciting stars in all of sports right now! At only the age of 22, he has helped lead the Spurs back to flory. We have not seen a player with his size, ball handling, shooting, and elite defense all combined and at an high level never ever before. The Spurs are 6 – 0 all-time in NBA Finals Game 1’s, so that an interesting fun fact. As a matter of fact The 2025-26 San Antonio Spurs are the second-youngest team to ever reach the NBA Finals at an average age (25.06). Only the 1977 Portland Trail Blazers at the age (25.03) were younger. The Spurs are also ahead of the the 2024-25 Oklahoma City Thunder (25.56) who won the title last year.

How they Got Here: Draft vs Trades
Like I just said in the beginning, this is probably one of the most hyped up finals in recent memory and I am really excited about it. The San Antonio Spurs are a young team who is built primarily from the draft. They drafted Victor Wembanyama with the 1st pick in 2023, Stephon Castle with the fourth pick in 2024, and Dylan Harper with the second pick in 2025. They were high-level and anticipated prospects that nearly every team wanted. On the other hand, we have the New York Knicks, who built their team through trades and Free Agency signings. They have players who their original teams did not want. The Dallas Mavericks didn’t want to pay Jalen Brunson back in 2022 (ahem Nico Harrison). The Timberwolves ended up trading Karl Anthony Towns to the Knicks during to his contract getting expensive each year. Josh Hart went from the Lakers to the Pelicans to the Blazers to now the Knicks. Mikal Bridges went from the Suns Finals team (I still miss you) to the Brooklyn Nets via the KD Trade, and now he is with the Knicks. I also have to mention Mike Brown who went from coaching LeBron and the Cavs to being an assistant with Golden State to coaching De’Aaron Fox and the Kings and leading them back to the playoffs. Brown has won four championships in total (3 as an assistant coach to Steve Kerr and the Warriors, and one as an assistant coach to Gregg Poppovich and the Spurs back in 2003). Many scouts and analysts said Jalen Brunson was an undersized point guard who could not lead his team back to the NBA Finals. The Spurs have a chance to be a potential future dynasty, while the Knicks have an opportunity to prove everybody wrong.

The Historic Knicks Run
The thing that nobody is talking about is that the Knicks are a tough and even potentially a bad matchup for the Spurs. The Knicks are on a 11 game win streak after being down 2 – 1 to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. They have been dominant and unstoppable since and have a +271 point differential heading into the NBA Finals. They are playing similar to the 2017 Warriors and 1996 Bulls, who are considered two of the greatest teams in NBA History. The Knicks are number one in point differential, offensive rating, and defensive rating. The Spurs are second or third in all those categories. Jalen Brunson is one of, if not the most clutches players in the entire league. We have to mention the Villanova Knicks (Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges) who have won a college national championship together with Villanova. I also have to mention that the Spurs are also amongst all of these teams at number seven, which shows how close and tight this matchup will be.

New York Knicks X-Factors
An x-factor for the Knicks will be Josh Hart. The Knicks spacing on defense and Har’s ability to switch on defense can make things a little difficult for Wemby. Not to mention he can also hit the three ball pretty well. They will also need to play physical and attack the rim to get the Spurs, especially Wemby in foul trouble early on.
Another x-factor for the Knicks will be shooters and playmakers they can bring off the bench. Players like Landry Shamet, Deuce McBride, Jose Alvarado, and Jordan Clarkson have stepped up during their playoff run, which will be an absolute must in this series. They are going to need to dominate and take advantage of the minutes Wemby is not playing on the floor. During these playoffs, the Spurs have a -2.1 point differential when Wemby is not playing.
A third x-factor for the New York Knicks will be their rebounding. The Spurs have yet to face a big man who can dominate the offensive glass like Mitchell Robinson can. Also, Karl Anthony Towns is playing the best he has ever played in his entire career during these playoffs. This Spurs only had to face Donovan Clingan, Rudy Gobert, Chet Holmgren, and Isaiah Hartenstein. This will definitely be a challenge for the Spurs.
The Knicks are also better at shooting and making threes. They also tend to turnover the ball less frequently than other teams as well. A fun fact I stumbled upon when I was researching was that since Victor Wembanyama was drafted back in 2023, there have only been 20 players who have defended him for at least 100 half court possessions. The players that has held him to the fewest points for possession is no other than OG Anunoby. He must step up on defense

The New York Knicks should not be an underdog and be underestimated by everybody. Mikal Bridges is shooting almost 60% from the field in the postseason, and also, Landry Shamet just shot 92% from three in the Conference Finals. However, we have to look at the competition the Knicks faced. They faced a sixth, seventh, and then fourth seed en route to the finals, while the Spurs faced a much more difficult competition in a more stacked western conference. If the Knicks are going to win, they have to step up on both sides of the ball. They have a 22 point comeback in game 1 against the Cavs in the Eastern Conference Finals. There have also been games where Brunson just straight up carried the team, while Karl-Anthony Towns was able to step up offensively. They answered nearly every call and stepped up when things mattered.

However, losing Mitchell Robinson is a bad blow for the Knicks as he could have been huge in stopping Wemby. But let’s be real, the Spurs are probably more injured and aged up. De’Aaron Fox has been playing through an injury and has not looked close to playing like an All-Star that he is. Stephon Castle also had about 20 turnovers in the first two game of the Western Conference finals. Dylan Harper has had his moments during these playoffs, but obviously has shown some rust as he is a rookie. I am just stating this to show that this series is more closer than what the people actually think. The Spurs have made the finals but are inexperienced.
San Antonio Spurs X-Factors
Similar to whoever has won the championship in most of NBA history, it’s going to come down to who has the better supporting cast and roles players. That is difficult to predict as both teams are deep. For the Knicks, KAT and Mikal Bridges must show up and play their role accordingly. Mike Brown also has to make the right adjustments at the right time. The Spurs need Fox, Castle, and Harper to all step up and contribute during big moments. They have felt like wild cards rather than being consistent. Like I said before, the Spurs need to be effective during the non-Wemby minutes, which they have struggled in throughout these entire playoffs. That’s a real problem as the Spurs tend to completely fall off and allow teams to go on huge runs when Wemby is off the floor. Castle needs to be effective on defense as well and find out a way to stop or at least slow down Jalen Brunson, otherwise it will be long nights for the San Antonio Spurs.

FINAL Prediction
The New York Knicks are first in Field Goal Personage and Offensive rating with 126.3. They also are shooting 51.5 percent from the field. The San Antonio Spurs are first in defensive rating with a 99.2 and have an opponent field goal percentage of 41.3. The Knicks also have some more experience and veteran presence than the Spurs, who are pretty much inexperienced. They went through a tough experience in last years conference finals against the Pacers, especially with Haliburton’s crazy shot in Game 1. The Spurs have overachieved many things this early already. This is honestly giving me a Dallas Mavericks upsetting the Miami Heat in 2011 vibes. Obviously the road to the Finals between those teams are completely different but the Finals matchup vibes are definitely similar if you know what I am talking about.
Without further waiting, here are my official predictions for who is going to win NBA Finals . This is a tough matchup to predict but ultimately I have a feeling that this is going to be 7 games. Both teams are playing at an high level, and even though the Spurs are a much better team on paper, I just can’t underestimate the New York Knicks at the level they are playing right now. But ultimately the Spurs won 62 games for a reason and were definitely the second best team in the NBA. I also think the Spurs played more difficult competition It’s going to be a close one but ultimately I have the Victor Wembanyama leading the Spurs to their sixth NBA Title in franchise history. Who knows. If this happens, he would have won the Defensive Player of the Year, finished third in MVP Voting, won Western Conference Finals MVP, and most likely would have won the Finals MVP. This might be the start of his GOAT case. Nonetheless, I just can’t want to see an high quality of basketball. Till we meet again, I’m signing off.
(Final Prediction: San Antonio Spurs in 7)
